چکیده

In this paper we present calculations of period distribution for old accreting isolated neutron stars (INSs). After few billion years of evolution low velocity INSs come to the stage of accretion. At this stage INS's period evolution is governed by magnetic braking and angular momentum accreted. Since the interstellar medium is turbulized accreted momentum can either accelerate or decelerate spin of an INS, therefore the evolution of period has chaotic character. Our calculations show that in the case of constant magnetic field accreting INSs have relatively long spin periods (some hours and more, depending on INS's spatial velocity, its magnetic field and density of the surrounding medium). Such periods are much longer than the values measured by ROSAT for 3 radio-silent isolated neutron stars. Due to long periods INSs should have high spin up/down rates, ˙ p, which should fluctuate on a time scale of ∼ 1 yr. Key words: neutron stars – magnetic fields – stars: magnetic field – X-rays: stars – accretion A&A manuscript no. On the number of accreting and cooling isolated neutron stars detectable with the ROSAT All-Sky Survey

We present limits to the log N − log S curve for isolated neutron stars, both cooling and accreting neutron stars, which are not active as radio pulsars, as observed with the ROSAT All-Sky Survey and compare it with theoretical expectations. So far, only one isolated neutron star is identified optically among ROSAT sources, namely RXJ185635-3754 (Walter & Matthews 1997). Three more promising ca...

We present here the computer model of the distribution of the lumi-nosity, produced by old isolated neutron stars (OINSs) accreting from the interstellar medium (ISM). We show, that for different mean velocities of OINSs the distribution of the luminosity has a torus-like structure, with the maximum at ≈ 5kpc.

Spatial distribution of the accretion luminosity of isolated neutron stars and black holes in the Galaxy

We present here a computer model of the spatial distribution of the luminosity, produced by old isolated neutron stars and black holes accreting from the interstellar medium. We show that the luminosity distributions in the Galaxy have a ring structure, with a maximum at ≈ 5kpc radius.

Evidence for magnetic field decay in RX J 0720 . 4 - 3125

The unidentified X-ray source RX J0720.4-3125 is a candidate isolated neutron star showing evidence for pulsed emission with an 8.39 s period and a spectrum consistent with a blackbody at kT = 80 eV (Haberl et al. 1996, 1997). We show that this source is most likely an old isolated neutron star accreting from surrounding media. We then argue that unless it was born with a long spin period (Pi ∼...

Constraining parameters of magnetic field decay for accreting isolated neutron stars

The influence of exponential magnetic field decay (MFD) on the spin evolution of isolated neutron stars is studied. The ROSAT observations of several X-ray sources, which can be accreting old isolated neutron stars, are used to constrain the exponential and power-law decay parameters. We show that for the exponential decay the ranges of minimum value of magnetic moment, μb, and the characterist...
